But that’s a picture of a ‘67. ‘67 is best year because it’s what’s in my garage and its new shoes are showing up today.

Or maybe it’s a ‘68 with ‘67 front fenders, as I see the Cougar script and side marker on the rear quarter. Odd.

‘67/’68 sheet metal, agreed. ‘69/’70 gets a little... misshapen. I don’t think the beak grill on the ‘70 or the running grill over the beak on the ‘69 looks as classy, and the side relief is just weird.

True, but make it a ‘75 then or so. It bit less ‘overripe’, yet still a cougar.

not 2000? :p

Too bad they canceled the Cougar S at the last minute (with the 200 hp Contour SVT V6). That’s what they needed to revive the Mercury brand. It was SO close to production that dealers had taken deposits for it, and you can still order parts for it.

More info about the stillborn Cougar S

Yep, it’s a cool car. My wife would prefer a Mustang, but I’ll stick with the current ride for a while at least. Mine’s a later ‘67 (April build date) so it’s still a 289, but has 302 stamped in the valley on the block. Still has the original engine and transmission.

Oh yes. I once helped a friend change plugs on one of the spring 1968 made Cougar GT-E with the 428 Cobra-jet. Only 30 some were made with that engine, earlier 427 cars had more horsepower. We had to unbolted the motor mounts and jacked the engine to get to the plugs easier. Its been so long (1974) I’m trying to recall the color, IIRC it was gold with black top.

I really like the days when cars had real metal details. It’s an attention to detail that doesn’t exist on modern cars today, but back then it was de rigueur for even the base model vehicles.

In all seriousness, the only time a generation of Cougar was better than the one that came before it was when it moved to the Fox platform (7th gen?). Besides that it actually became worse each time they updated it. 67-70 is clearly the best cougar.

I have no idea, it was a nearby neighbor of my best friend from school. We were just 19 then and he was in the same tech school with me in Elizabeth City NC. He lived near the Coast Guard base there. I went off to a regular college and didn’t see him again for about 10 yrs. Never asked whatever became of it. Being it was a sorta military town if it was sold, a Coast Guardsman could have taken it when moving to another base. Some cars got bought and sold repeatedly to incoming guardsmen as others transferred . My Fiat 850 Spider was around that town from 1971 to 1980. My Triumph TR4 was around there until about 1985. I had moved away but when visiting saw my two old rides a few times and my best friend’s old Fury II 2 Dr with 318.
